A museum between sense and nonsense

Otto Waalkes House in Emden

Otto Waalkes is a German comedian, actor, and musician. He became famous in the 1970s and 1980s in Germany with his shows, books and films. His best known trademark is the 'Ottifanten' ('Ottiphants'), elephant-like comic characters of his own design. Waalkes also works as a voice actor, providing the German voices of Mushu in Disney's Mulan movies, Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age franchise, and the Grinch in The Grinch, among others. He is a bard and pioneer of the well-groomed joke. Otto always lived from bringing the noble side of life down to the bottom of the low joke.

A particularly memorable work by the artist Waalkes is located on the first floor of Emder Otto-Huus: the sculpture of an Ottifanten staring down from the dike into a bucket with wide eyes and open mouth. The bucket, the animal, the dike - all of this is combined in the silent lament of the East Frisian individual against the accelerated world. Then someone presses the button on the base and a jet of water shoots out of the mouth with a throaty scream. The Ottifant pukes. The viewer is startled and laughs.

During your journey across the East Frisia Region visit "Dat Otto Huus" in Emden, a small cathedral of humor, and just have fun.
